Job Title and Description:
Senior Electronics Engineer

The University of Hawai'i 2.2 meter telescope located on Mauna Kea, Hawai’i, is looking for a Senior Electronics Engineer with experience in mechanical, optical, and cryogenic technologies.  Previous experience working with telescopes and astronomical instrumentation is preferred although not essential.  This person will lead a small team of technicians to provide support and maintenance of the telescope and related systems as well as implement improvement for enhanced functionality and reliability.  Work at high altitude (14,000 ft) is required as well as a valid drivers license.  Duties and responsibilities include:

• Designing, testing, maintaining, and upgrading electronic, mechanical, and cryogenic systems related to the telescope and instrumentation.
• Advises scientific staff on the design, specification, and implementation of technical projects based on user requirements.
• Supervises and reviews work performed by subordinate technical and temporary staff.
• Writing/modifying DSP firmware for control of telescope sub-systems, ancillary equipment, and instrumentation.
• Researching, specifying, and purchasing products, equipment and components for current and future projects.
• Preparation and on-going maintenance of detailed documentation.
• Understanding and aligning telescope and instrument optics.
• Interacting effectively with visiting observers/engineers and explaining complex systems/operations.
• Working independently toward objectives set by the Telescope Director.
